It's no secret that high school, college, and university athletes are beloved and admired in their respective communities, and this is especially true in the U.S.; but all too often their status shields them from facing responsibilities or consequences that they sometimes deserve.

I spend my weekends sitting on the bleachers covering Varsity Reds’ sports. Whether it’s soccer, hockey, basketball, or volleyball, I’m sitting in the stands and watching university athletes play the sport to which they dedicate their university lives. While covering these sports, there was one thing I realized; professional athletes and university athletes play for different reasons.

When William Faulkner wrote of the “pattern, design almost beautiful” of hockey, “that second before … [disintegration] and dissolve,” not only was his a perfect picture of the spectatorship of a sport, but the volatility of being in love with one.

Last week, I got a phone call from a man who wanted to pitch me a story. He introduced himself as Thomas White. I found it strange that he was calling—normally pitches are submitted to me by email—but quickly realized why he decided to give the Fulcrum a ring.
